Catrina del Teatro, was a collaborative effort between mother daughter team Palma Corral and Ithea Engum-Corral, and Alejandro Barragan. This Catrina was created with the intention of being displayed in The Armory, a theater space. Having this in mind her clothing was constructed to project a semi historical feel and theatrical quality.
Ithea painted the limbs and skull of the Catrina while Palma made the dress. Ithea also drew the drawings on the Illuminated scroll. She took inspiration from nature, and Aztec mythology; using imagery of the gods Quetzalcoatl and Xolotl. Palma wrote the text for the scroll, inspired by the illuminated manuscript and by her study of Vedantic text. Alejandro provided technical support in the construction and many of the materials for the production, as well as being the initiator of the project. In keeping with the Propulsion Network Project mission she was constructed using many recycled and repurposed materials. The project as a whole is a multi-cultural fusion of images, ideas and motifs from Mexican, Mexica, Hinduism, European and US cultures.
Ithea Engum-Corral is a musician, painter, and recent graduate of the University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Romance Languages and French. She started a band Rev, with her friends in high school, and together they recorded an EP, Dancing on the Blacktop.
